Critical Speaking is the ability to communicate effectively while also critically evaluating information, analyzing arguments, and expressing one's ideas with clarity and logic, then it would align with the broader concept of critical thinking and effective communication. In general, Critical Speaking is the merging of critical thinking with speaking. Critical thinking involves the ability to evaluate information, make reasoned judgements, and solve problems. When applied to speaking, this would involve expressing oneself in a way that demonstrates a thoughtful and analytical approach to the subject matter, considering different perspectives, and providing evidence or reasons to support one's assertions.
There are 3 purposes of Critical Speaking: First, Critical speaking empowers you to influence others and make a lasting impact in various situations. Second, It hones your ability to analyze, evaluate, and present ideas effectively. Third, Developing critical speaking skills boosts self confidence and enhances your personal and professional growth. To achieve the goal of critical speaking, several keys are needed, among others; we must be able to make eye contact with our interlocutors in order to create a strong sense of trust and connection with them. Our body language is also very influential to our interlocutors, using body language increases our confidence through our gestures and posture. The style of language we use is also influential in maintaining the attention of our interlocutors so that they do not look away from us.
So, how do we build the confidence to speak up in public? The first thing to do is Self-Awareness, Understand your strengths and weaknesses and be honest with yourself about areas improvement. Keep practising, the more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you will become in communicating your ideas. Preparation, be well-prepared and organized for your speaking engagements to minimize potential distractions.
